The Crime of Art
Animated Outlaws

Description
In Pieter Samyn’s surreal animated short Ziggurat, a police commissioner chases down pieces of "bad art" as they send the audience spiralling into depravity. But in the real world, what makes art good or bad? Animators occupy a strange cultural purgatory: spending months obsessing over frame-by-frame fine art, only to have their works dismissed as lowbrow entertainment. Following his film screening, Samyn invites you into a funny, chaotic exploration of cultural taste. This talk investigates the arbitrary lines drawn between prestige and comedy – and celebrates animation as the ultimate outlaw of the art world.
