Mitate: Material-Motif Bridge

The unique charm of stop-motion animation intensifies as real-world materials assert their textures more strongly. Yet, highly textured materials are often uncooperative with the artist, frequently hindering the accurate portrayal of the subject. This creates a dilemma: do we sacrifice realism for the sake of material texture, or do we subdue the materials for the sake of realism? Yashiro suggests that "mitate"—the Japanese concept of perceiving a material's characteristics as the motif's own—resolves this dilemma. This practice goes beyond mere reproduction, achieving a higher dimension of realism that expresses the artist's unique vision.
