From Book to Screen

What happens when a picture book becomes an animated series? Adaptation is never only about images – it is also about writing. Through “Il est une fois”, adapted from Camille de Cussac's books (Marcel & Joachim), and “Petit Malabar”, from books by Jean Duprat and Nelly Blumenthal (Albin Michel), Patrick Volve compares two journeys from page to screen. The graphic challenge: giving a strong still-image universe movement, rhythm and time. The writing challenge: turning a few pages into structured stories with characters and dramatic arcs. With concept art, scripts and animatics, he reveals what to keep, what to reinvent, and how both an illustrator's line and a writer's voice become animation.
